The young gull is growing up fast and despite being home alone for long stretches, being left outside in all weathers and staying up far later than any youngster surely should, he seems to be doing alright. Here he is a couple of weeks ago, on a rainy day, eleven days older than when I first photographed him the day he arrived on the roof.

He’ll be dreaming of chips, preferably lifted from the fingers of small children…

The chick is so much prettier than its parents, it doesn’t have a cold hard glint in its eyes yet!

Yes he is quite cute; I do think he’s a boy – he gets bored easily, collects stones & bits of stick and seems to want to eat a lot! In fairness to his parents they probably need that steely-eyed determined look to protect their chicks and themselves. It does work – mother gull only has to give me ‘the look’ and a couple of squawks and I put the camera straight down!

Sounds about right! We have lots of gulls living in Ealing at the moment, instead of catching fish or chips they seem to whirl around fields, presumably eating insects.
